An Unbroken Line

POINTtec stands for continuity in an industry where breaks are the norm. We have never been sold, never restructured, never merged into cooperations – and certainly never disappeared from the market. Since its founding, POINTtec has drawn a clear, independent line. Without interruption. Without compromise. Successful, with a forward-looking perspective.

A Sustainable Business Model

We design watches that last – with a design that works independently of trends and endures over the years. For us, sustainability means not only durable materials but also a clear attitude: no fast fashion, no fleeting hype.

Independent and Well-Connected

For decades, we have operated as a volume manufacturer in the watch industry. Our large production volumes make us an attractive customer for every partner, giving us access to the best suppliers in the world. As an independent company with short decision-making paths, we select our partners ourselves – with care, prudence, and a clear demand for quality. Our products – and our customers – benefit from this.

Our Purchasing Power – Your Advantage

With well over 100,000 watches produced per year, we are one of the largest manufacturers in Germany. We leverage this scale: we purchase parts where quality and price align – and on terms usually reserved for large corporations. The difference? We pass these benefits directly on to you. That’s why our watches are so high-quality – and still surprisingly affordable.

Medium-sized Family Business

From starting at zero to becoming a hidden champion: Our family company stands for healthy growth without tricks – completely without external investors. More and more people are falling in love with our watches, which keeps driving our steady growth. Founded by Senior Managing Director Willi Birk, the company is now led by Junior Managing Director Nathalie Birk – a true generational change with vision and values. We remain independent – out of conviction.

Made in Germany

By manufacturing in-house, we ensure quality and preserve valuable jobs. At the same time, we uphold tradition and industrial culture. Our brands tell the stories of German pioneers – authentic, powerful, and full of character. This is how we connect past and future and stand for values that endure.

What Quality Means to Us

For us, quality means full control through in-house manufacturing, experienced professionals passionate about precision, and a strong network of partners who share our high standards. Every connection, every component – everything at the highest level. Because true quality is created where experience, care, and responsibility come together.

Specialist Retail Partners

Specialist stores are more than just sales partners for us – they are ambassadors of our brand. With stable prices and fair conditions, we build trust and reliability. This way, we not only strengthen brick-and-mortar retail but also contribute to preserving vibrant town centers as places where advice, craftsmanship, and personality have their place.

The Cultural Heritage of Mechanical Watches for Everyone

Quartz watches are modern, precise, versatile, and straightforward. However, mechanical watches are more than just timekeepers – they are cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and emotion. We believe everyone should be able to afford a mechanical watch of good quality with high-end design. Offering such timepieces has become our mission.

In-House Assembly and World-Class Suppliers

Thanks to our in-house assembly at the Ruhla Watchworks in Thuringia, we have full control over the quality of every single watch delivered. For example, every mechanical watch is finely regulated by us. We collaborate with first-class and reliable suppliers who also supply components to well-known luxury watch manufacturers.

Watches in Tune with the Times

Our designs aren’t fleeting fashion trends but contemporary, clear, and enduringly attractive, finding their audience. Behind each of our watch brands and collections lies an exciting story – making our timepieces unique and giving them a character that lasts.

Rethink!

With the watches from the “Sustainable Planet” program, ZEPPELIN helps innovative technologies, products, and materials gain more visibility. Nowadays, materials can increasingly be replaced by green alternatives without compromise. The “Sustainable Planet” program aims to inspire openness to such alternatives and to envision a green future shaped by progress, not sacrifice.

The Materials

The SEAQUAL straps are made from raw materials recovered from plastic waste collected from oceans and beaches. Straps made from recycled leather use offcuts from the leather industry, which are shredded and combined with a binder to create new leather material. A vegan alternative is apple leather, where apple pomace from juice production is mixed with a binder to produce high-quality synthetic leather. For the dials, a special high-tech material is used: EcoCeramic. It consists of ceramic particles (zirconium oxide) and a bio-polymer made from plant-based castor oil. This technology enables mechanically and visually exceptional polymer materials that are not based on fossil raw materials.

The Movements

The mechanical movements are designed for decades of durability and can be repaired repeatedly. They are complemented by solar movements, which harness the power of the sun to make regular battery replacements unnecessary.

After becoming the youngest master baker in Germany, earning both a degree in Business Administration and the title of Diplom-Ökonom from the University of Hohenheim, and working successfully in sales for two different companies, Willi Birk decided to start his own business in 1987. His first watch line was an immediate success and marked the starting point for the company.

After initially working with the watch industry in France – a partnership that ultimately proved unsatisfactory – company founder Willi Birk decided to shift his focus to Made in Germany. Shortly after German reunification, the opportunity arose to collaborate with the successor of the historic Ruhla watchworks in Thuringia. Without hesitation, Willi Birk packed all parts and materials into his Volvo station wagon, drove everything to Ruhla, and made the watchmaking town in Thuringia the new production center of his watch company.

A Dream Comes True! A passion for historic aviation – especially the Zeppelin airships from Lake Constance – leads to the founding of the ZEPPELIN watch brand, made possible by a long-term licensing agreement with the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen. The world of Zeppelins, once considered the most luxurious way to travel, has served as a powerful source of inspiration for over 20 years, shaping numerous watch collections that have also found success internationally.

Just in time for the company’s 30th anniversary, Nathalie Birk – daughter of founder Willi Birk – joins the business. With a Master’s degree in Business Administration and an MBA from Colorado State University Pueblo, she initially focuses on the Marketing and International Sales departments. In 2022, she steps into the role of Managing Director, a position she has held jointly with her father ever since.

POINTtec joins the rather exclusive circle of watch companies with their own in-house production. In August 2019, the company takes over its long-standing production partner in Ruhla. All jobs at the production site are preserved, and the future of the listed Bauhaus building and the watch museum is secured. The watchmaking tradition in Ruhla – which dates back to 1862 – continues.

To celebrate the acquisition of the Ruhla watchworks, the watch brand bauhaus is launched. The company building itself – now also part of POINTtec – is a listed Bauhaus-style structure designed in 1929 by the regionally renowned architects Schreiter and Schlag. Quality

Our watches are assembled and tested by experienced watchmakers in our own production facility in Ruhla, Thuringia – a region steeped in the tradition of German watchmaking. This gives us full control over the quality of every watch we deliver. Each timepiece represents precision, care, and true craftsmanship. The key advantage for our

customers: every single watch is not only assembled but also finely regulated in multiple positions before it leaves our workshop. This ensures that our timepieces deliver excellent accuracy from the very first moment. This uncompromising quality control guarantees longevity, reliability – and a genuine piece of German watchmaking tradition on your wrist.

Tradition since

1862

In 1862, the Thiel brothers founded a manufacturing facility for precision mechanical components in Ruhla, Thuringia. The company soon celebrated major success with a toy watch and, in 1892, began producing real watches. While watches were still being handcrafted individually elsewhere, Ruhla became a pioneer in serial production. This was made possible in part by the factory’s unique approach: it invented, developed, and built its own production machinery in-house. Remarkably, many of the key ideas came not from engineers or executives, but from the workers on the production floor themselves.

During the Second World War, production was shifted to military goods, which led to the expropriation of the Thiel family after the war. The company was nationalized in favor of the Soviet Union. But innovation continued. In Ruhla, for example, electronic wristwatches were developed – the precursors to quartz watches – which were produced in the millions and became global export hits. The company, now renamed VEB Uhrenwerke Ruhla, achieved legendary status with its mechanical movement Caliber 24, which was produced an astonishing 150 million times and sold all over the world.

After reunification, the company was broken up into many smaller businesses and the vast industrial complex was demolished. Only the listed Bauhaus building, designed by architects Schreiter and Schlag in 1929, was preserved. A small team led by former development director Kamp continued watch production here, including manufacturing for POINTtec since the early 1990s. In 2019, POINTtec took over the Ruhla operation, including the watch assembly, the Bauhaus building, and all production employees.

With over 100,000 watches produced annually, we are one of Germany’s largest watch manufacturers and have been in the business for over 35 years. Our strict commitment to "Made in Germany" and the quality that comes with it has resulted in an exceptionally low return rate for decades. If there should ever be an issue with your watch, it is our goal to handle any service or warranty case in the best possible way — usually in cooperation with the retailer where you purchased your watch. This retailer should always be your first point of contact.

Useful Information & Care Instructions

Be sure to read the “Material & Product Use Instructions” included with your watch. Here are the most important guidelines for handling your watch:

Protect your watch from shocks and impacts.
All watches, especially those with mechanical movements, can be sensitive to shocks. This includes activities such as tennis or golf. Even a bump against a door frame or dropping the watch can damage the delicate mechanics inside.

Protect leather straps from water and excessive sweating.
Regular leather straps can be quickly damaged and lose their appearance when exposed to moisture. Use a metal or synthetic strap if you expect to wear the watch in situations with high humidity or moisture.

Protect your watch from extreme temperature changes.
Examples: Going from a winter walk straight into a hot shower, or from the sun on the beach into cold seawater. Such temperature shocks are harmful to the materials, especially the seals.

Warranty Details

Your watch comes with a standard two-year manufacturer’s warranty. Your first point of contact for any warranty claims should always be the retailer where you purchased your watch.

IMPORTANT: Warranty claims do NOT cover normal wear and tear on leather straps, customer-caused damage to the glass, case, or bezel, or damage resulting from shocks or impacts.

Thanks to decades of experience in design, development, and manufacturing, we realize customized watch solutions for renowned clients in large quantities – from the initial idea to final delivery. With our production in Germany, we stand for the highest standards and true craftsmanship. Put your trust in our expertise and contact us about your project.

Private Label Requirements

Basis
As a rule, we only consider projects based on watches we already produce. While almost anything is possible when it comes to the dial design, the cases must be used as we offer them. Please browse our collections across our three brands to find models that could serve as the basis for your project. Pay close attention to the functions the watch should have, as these determine the movement and, ultimately, the price.

|

Quantity
The key factor! The higher the quantity, the more flexibility we have to go beyond the standard parameters we’ve set. The absolute minimum for private label projects based on watches under €1,000 is 300 units.

For projects based on watches over €1,000, the minimum is 50 watches with an identical dial.
